At yesterday's Camden Council elections, the three Labour candidates (listed below) were elected to serve for the new South Hampstead ward.
Much delayed, and too late for the Easter break school holidays, the upgraded children's playground on Broadhurst Gardens is now open. It has a number of new features but retains the perennial favourites -- swings, slide and roundabout. Take your children or grandchildren to test drive it.
The ability to object, support or just comment on Landsec's application to develop the O2 Centre site via the "comments" facility on Camden's planning portal has now been ended. Camden extended the period for comments to 17 April, and again to 22 April. but the period is now over. However, residents are still able to make their views known to Camden by sending an email to David Fowler, the senior planner overseeing the O2 application, at david.fowler@camden.gov.uk
or by post to: David Fowler, Planning Dept L B of Camden 2nd floor, 5 Pancras Square c/o Town Hall, Judd Street London WC1H 9JE Please quote the application reference 2022/0528/P in your communication. CRASH submitted strong objections (see earlier items) to the proposed conversion of Lilian Baylis House on Broadhurst Gardens for use as a private school. We are pleased to report that the school's application was refused.
CRASH has, over a considerable time, supported the residents of Swiss Cottage in their campaign to end Deliveroo's industrial kitchens (the so called 'dark kitchens') in what is a largely residential area. At a Planning Committee meeting last Thursday evening (07/04/22) Camden refused permission for the continued use of the kitchens. The residents look forward to seeing Deliveroo packing its bags and moving to a more suitable - distant - location. Very late in the day, the Lib/Dems have announced their candidates for the South Hampstead ward in the Council elections to be held on the 5th May. They are:
Having failed in its bid to have Camden's rejection of its proposals for affordable housing overturned at appeal, the owners, Essential Living, has now submitted a new appeal. It is now asking the Planning Inspectorate to overrule Camden and permit it to substitute cheaper (GRC instead of real stone) cladding materials on the exterior. As we've said before - the saga continues.
It ain't over till the fat lady sings. Members will recall that in October 2021 a private school, North Bridge House, submitted a planning application for the use of English National Opera's building on Broadhurst Gardens (Lilian Baylis House) as a school for 300 pupils. A less-suitable site for a school - in the humble opinion of CRASH - could hardly be imagined, the building being next door to a pub, with other bars, cafes etc as neighbours. CRASH, together with other amenity groups voiced concern, and a formal objection was submitted to the Council. At the time, English National Opera denied that the building was being put up for sale, claiming that the site wasn't "formally on the market" and that any planning application was "entirely speculative". It is now reported that Lilian Baylis House is being marketed with a price tag of £11 million. Is this the end of opera in CRASH-land? We await the final aria from the fat lady.
Further to the item 'New Councillors' dated 12/01/22, here is an update. We stated in the news item that our ward councillor Simon Pearson had decided not to stand in the election to be held on Thursday, 5th May 2022. However, Simon had a change of heart and put himself forward to stand again, only to be de-selected by his 'comrades' in the local Labour Party. South Hampstead has now had two of its three ward councillors de-selected, following the earlier ban on Cllr Leo Cassarani.
In the same news item we pointed out that the election would be held for the new South Hampstead Ward (at present Swiss Cottage) and that Polling Districts within the Ward would change. For instance, residents in the northern section of the ward - roughly north of Canfield Gardens - will now be required to cast their votes at the Acol Bridge Club on West End Lane rather than the traditional venue of the Crossfield Centre on Fairhazel Gardens. Your Polling Station will be shown on your Poll Card which are sent out by Camden nearer to the election date. Members are reminded to check their Polling Station before heading out to cast their vote. As most members will know from local media coverage, Land Securities (Landsec) has now submitted its planning application to Camden for the development (over-development) of the site. In due course, CRASH will ask all its members and friends to submit objections, and hopes shortly to be able to give targeted advice on grounds for refusal. It is anticipated that Camden will not table the application for committee until the early summer, giving us adequate time to marshal our forces.
